Summer 1

In Maths this half term, we will be continuing to recap our number and place value skills during Maths starters and morning jobs. Our main focus is Fractions, where we will recap what halves, quarters and thirds are, learn to recognise fractions and use fractions as numbers and identify equivalent fractions.

Our focus reader this half term is ‘I was there…’, which explores the life on board the Titanic from the point of view of a child. We will continue to develop our growing range of grammatical skills and will be using these to write a diary entry of the event as if we were passengers.

In Science we will be continuing to learn about different forces. We will investigate friction and test if different surfaces on a ramp make a car move more slowly. Additionally, we will be learning We will also spend time discussing the importance of fair testing and will use these principles to plan our own investigations.

This half term our lovely Year 3s are learning about the famous Titanic. We will be comparing the facilities on board between the different classes, investigating why the ship sank and we will be looking at the evidence that has been left behind. The children have already had a taste of what it was like to be a passenger on board, experiencing life in the different classes and how they were treated differently. We will also be investigating who may have been to blame for the tragedy, considering decisions that were made by different people.

This half term in PE, we are fortunate to work with Rob from Sheffield United on Tuesdays, where we will be learning a range of athletic skills. With Miss Cundy and Mrs Horbury on Wednesdays, we will be focusing on the game of Rounders. We will learn how to play different roles in a game, think tactically and how to work as a team. To finish our unit, we are going to play a mega game of Rounders, Y3C vs Y3H!

Spring 2

In maths this half term, we will be finishing our work on money, including adding and subtracting money and giving change from a given amount. We will then be learning Statistics, including looking at bar charts, pictograms, and tally charts. We are so impressed with Year 3’s progression with their times tables. Please continue to practise the 3,4 and 8 times tables with your child at home, using TT Rockstars, Hit the Button and Daily 10 to support their learning. This half term we are aiming for all children to achieve their Bronze badge (2,5 and 10s times tables) including both multiplication and division calculations in and out of order.

During our Literacy lessons we will be continuing to apply our developing grammatical skills across a range of text types. We will work hard to include a range of different features in our writing. Our text focus this half term will be ‘Escape from Pompeii’ and we will be using this to support our topic learning as we explore the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Our topic this half term is ‘Volcanoes!’ We will be learning about what a volcano is, where they are located and why they erupt. We will also be considering the environmental implications of volcanic eruptions across the globe.

In Science we will be looking at ‘Forces and Magnetism’. We will be looking at which metals are attracted to which magnets and exploring the forces in the world around us. There will be lots of opportunities for children to develop their skills with working scientifically as we will be carrying out numerous investigations to test their ideas.

Spring 1

In Literacy this half term, we will be focusing on the story of ‘Flat Stanley: The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery’. We will be continuing to think about how to make our sentences more interesting, including the use of ambitious vocabulary, conjunctions, prepositions, expanded noun phrases and adverbs. We will be working on writing a range of different text types, including narrative stories, instructions and non-fiction pieces.

In Maths this half term, we will be finishing our work on multiplication and division. Please continue to practise times tables at home with your child, as by the end of Year 3 they should be confident with all of the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables. We will also be learning about money this half term, thinking about how to make different amounts and using the four operations to work with money.

Our Topic for this half term is ‘Ancient Egypt!’ We will be learning about what the daily lives of Ancient Egyptians were like, including comparing how the lives of farmers and Pharaohs would have been different. We will talk about the class system during that time and will also think about the importance of the River Nile. We will explore Ancient Egyptian beliefs around life and death and also look at the lives of some significant individuals, for example King Tutankhamun.

In Science this half term we will be learning about ‘Light’. We will talk about how light travels and different sources of light. We will also investigate how and why shadows are formed and how these can be changed. Importantly, we will be discussing the idea of sun safety and how we can protect our eyes.

In Music, we will continue to be learning the violin! The children are progressing so well with this and it is so lovely to see their confidence improving from week to week.

Autumn 1

In Year 3 this half term, we have been learning all about the Stone Age. We have talked about how life was different for people living in that time, including how they got food, what they ate, where they lived and how they dressed. We have also thought about how we know about the past, thinking about important discoveries by archaeologists which have taught us about the Stone Age.

In Science, we have been learning all about rocks. We have sorted and classified them using their shared properties and have even learned about how fossils are formed and what soil is made of.

In Literacy, we have been working on improving our writing, choosing more exciting adjectives and extending our sentences in a range of different ways. Most of our work this half term has been using our class text, ‘Stone Age Boy’.

In Guided Reading, we have continued to develop important reading skills to help us understand what we are reading, including inference, retrieval, summarising and predicting. We have also done lots of work on the vocabulary used within different texts, to make sure we understand everything we are reading.

In Maths, we have worked on developing our place value knowledge, thinking about the value of each of the digits in 3-digit numbers. We have used this to help us to order and compare numbers and have also developed our skills to find 10 more and less and even 100 more and less. We have also begun working on our times tables, extending our knowledge to begin learning the 3, 8 and 4 times tables.

In Computing, we have learned about how computers are connected to each other. We have also begun learning French, thinking about simple greetings, numbers and colours.

As part of our Music lessons, we have begun learning the violin. This will continue weekly throughout the year and we cannot wait to see how our skills progress!
