Summer 1

Welcome to Summer 1! This jam-packed term will have a topic focus of 'Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole', where children will meet Florence Nightingale and learn about their contributions to nursing in an exciting day of drama and history.

In Literacy we will begin reading George's Marvellous medicine. The children will be writing character and setting descriptions as well as writing instructions on how to make their very own medicines.

As Spring ends and Summer approaches, we are steering our science learning towards the ever-changing world of plants and trees. We will be taking a visit to the Old Moor Wetlands Centre to learn all about the many plants that help make our world a beautiful place to be.

Our understanding of number is being built upon when we continue our learning on place value within 50, before delving deep into the exciting world of multiplication and division!

In computing we will be exploring programming and introducing the children to animation using Scratch Jr. In DT we will be learning how to attach different materials together to design and produce our own hand puppets. In PE we will continue developing ball skills and introducing tennis to the children.

Spring 2

Welcome to Spring 2 in Year 1! We have kicked off our learning by immersing ourselves in the ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ story by Julia Donaldson. We have started by making our own giant story maps and using digital tools to help us retell the story. Accompanying our beginning text, we are continuing to learn about humans and animals in science. Our classrooms have been invaded by some farm animals from our story and we are using our observation skills to help us identify which animal left which poo in our classroom! Are they a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore? We will then be considering what it takes to be a responsible pet owner by taking a trip to Reception to help handle some chicks.

The animal thread is woven into our art learning this half-term, where we will be creating sculptures and collages of living things by using a wide range of art materials. We will finish our art learning by producing a class sculpture of a spider, inspired by Bourgeois’s Maman spider sculpture. Look away now!

In our maths learning we are continuing to build upon our knowledge of addition and subtraction within 20. We are using lots of different representations to help deepen our understanding of numbers within 20 and the methods of addition and subtraction.

In PE we are lucky enough to have Rob from SUFC and Mr Barker to help us improve our ball skills.

Thank you for your continued support as we look forward to continuing our journey of immersive, creative and engaging learning.

Spring 1

In Spring 1 we are focusing on toys through time. We brought in our own toys and compared them to our teachers' toys. In Literacy our key fictional text is 'Traction Man'. We have been creating our own characters and are writing our own stories using them. There have been some creative and original ideas! We are looking at 2D and 3D shapes in Maths and place value within 20. We are exploring how wheels and axles work in DT which will lead to us designing and making our own cars for Traction Man. In Science we are studying humans where we will be exploring our senses in different ways. We are also looking at sorting different animals and naming them. In Computing we are exploring Robots (specifically Beebots). We will be learning how to programme them to move.

We have begun teaching from our new phonics scheme ‘Little Wandle’, and the children are working really hard to solidify their sounds both in and out of phonics lessons. We are teaching a new grapheme daily, in addition to reviewing and revising GPCs and words, daily, weekly and across the year, in order to move this knowledge into their long-term memory to aid their fluency.

Autumn 2

In Autumn 2 our topic focus is the United Kingdom. We are studying the four countries that make up the UK and the surrounding seas and oceans. In Literacy we are beginning our learning by exploring the story 'Katie in London', writing our own setting descriptions to describe London landmarks. Our Maths learning is continuing to focus on addition and subtraction under 10. We are studying weather and seasons in Science, keeping a daily weather diary. Our Art lessons will develop our skills in line drawing by using a variety of tools and approaches. In Computing, we are practising our typing skills with a digital writing focus. In the run up to Christmas, Year 1 and Year 2 are collaborating to put on a fantastic nativity production called 'Children Of The World', which looks at how Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world.

Autumn 1

This half term we are focusing on ourselves and how we have changed since we were babies. We are also comparing  houses in the past and present. In Literacy we are reading the 3 little pigs and retelling the story using Pie Corbett Talk 4 writing. In Maths we are looking at Place value and addition/subtraction.  In Computing we are learning what Technology is. In Science we have been naming common materials and their properties. In PE we are practicing multiskills such as balancing and controlling a ball.
