Active Travel
We all know how much the journey to school has changed since we were at school ourselves - more traffic, less social contact with others, more pressure of time. Through working together to raise the awareness of the positive benefits of more active and sustainable travel choices, such as walking, cycling or using public transport. We can bring about attitude and behaviour changes and encourage positive lifestyle choices amongst pupils, parents and school staff.
By having a Travel Plan we will raise awareness to encourage more active and sustainable travel choices through setting out individual practical measures and initiatives for reducing the number of drop off and pick ups in the car. This will also support road saftey in our local community.
The Action Plan outlines what will be achieved, including targets with dates and people assigned to each action. For example:
- Walk to school week
- 10 Day Active Travel
- Encourage Park and Ride
- Information to be displayed regarding walking routes and Bus/Tram timetables
Information regarding upcoming events will be on our school newsletter and displayed on the events board outside KS1 yard.
We understand that parking near school can be extremely difficult and somewhat unsafe with young children around. We awould like to support parent/carers with the transition to and from school on a daily basis. There are many options for families to travel to/from school safely that are also supporting the economical aspects for the environment our children are growing up in. With this in mind there are options to catch a bus/tram and walk. Below are the links to the supertram, First bus and also Stagecoach. These journey planners are so useful as they will explain where you need to go and how long it will take along with the price of the journey.

MODESHIFT STARS:
Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children and young people. Every school in England (outside of London) can participate in Modeshift STARS. On completion of an application for Modeshift STARS, schools will automatically have a brand new national standard School Travel Plan.

Rivelin Primary school have just been awarded Outstanding STARS School of the Local Authority. This is a great achievement for the school and we continue to promote sustainable travel to and from school.
PARK AND STRIDE
Families can make the school journey simpler, safer, and less stressful by using park and ride services. Instead of driving through busy school traffic, parents can park in a designated area and complete the journey by bus or shuttle, helping to reduce congestion around schools and create a cleaner environment for everyone. Park and ride travel also encourages children to develop confidence using public transport, while giving families a more relaxed start and end to the school day. By choosing park and ride, families are supporting greener travel habits and helping make local roads safer for pupils, parents, and the wider community.
