Year 6 2021 - 2022
Meet the Team
As part of our studies this term we will be reading 'Goodnight Mister Tom' by Michelle Magorian, which will be linked with our topic of World War 2 and evacuees. It's a wonderful book, full of hope, sadness and joy, and a fitting book to go with the fascinating topic of WW2. In Literacy, the children will be writing their own poetry about war, and then writing a letter home in the style of an evacuee. We will be doing various different activities to help the children get in to the mindset of an evacuee from that time in history. In maths we will be looking at coordinates and decimals, and will be continuing our recaps as part of our build-up towards SATS. Swimming will be finishing this term, however, the children will have the opportunity to be learning gymnastics in school as part of their P.E. lessons. In science we will be looking at different animal classification groups, while in ICT the children will be learning how to create their own website. An exciting term awaits!
During Autumn 2, Y6 studied Evolution, DNA and the work of Messers Crick and Watson in discovering the structure of DNA. Our writing in Literacy was related to this topic, and involved writing a newspaper report about the discovery, followed by a biography of Crick, Watson or Rosalind Franklin - an often overlooked contemporary of Crick and Watson who made a huge contribution to the discovery of the structure of DNA. In maths, we studied fractions in their various forms, and the children became adept at comparing, ordering, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. They worked extremely hard! The run up to Christmas saw us preparing intensely for our Christmas singing performance. The children sang beautifully, and prepared with great professionalism inspite of the fact that the concerts would have to be recorded. Despite our busy schedule, the children still found time to learn the basics of handball in P.E., and continued with their catch-up swimming sessions every Tuesday.
During this half term we studied Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief as our class novel, tying in with our topic of Ancient Greece. The classes explored the legacy of Ancient Greece and the influence of the civilization on modern society. Our writing pieces were related to Percy Jackson, and included a non-chronological report on a Greek god, and an adventure story of the children’s own creation. In maths, we recapped place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This was in addition to weekly arithmetic assessments, which form part of our preparation for SATs. In science studied light and its properties, while in P.E. we worked on our basketball skills, specifically passing, dribbling and shooting. Y6 were also fortunate to have the opportunity for catch-up swimming sessions every Tuesday, in lieu of those missed due to Covid.
PE Days: Tuesdays and Wednesdays
Please can children take out their earrings on their PE days and wear appropriate PE kit on these days.
